Origin: Thangathi Coffee Factory, New Gikaru FCS
This coffee is processed at the Thangathi Coffee Factory, about 152 km northeast of Nairobi in Nyeri County. The factory operates under the New Gikaru Farmers' Cooperative Society and is Fairtrade certified, sourcing cherries from smallholders who each farm an average of 0.8 acres and around 200 coffee trees, mainly of the Ruiru 11, SL-28, SL-34, and Batian varieties.
Thangathi sits at 1,590–1,600 metres above sea level on deep, fertile, well-drained red volcanic soils, with a moderate bimodal rainfall pattern of around 1,100mm a year. Beyond the coffee itself, New Gikaru FCS runs a nursery supporting sustainable production and youth and young-mother participation in farming, alongside climate-smart practices across the cooperative.
Harvest & Post-Harvest
Coffee trees at Thangathi flower twice a year, in March–April and September–October, giving two harvest windows in May–June and November–December. After picking, ripe cherries are pulped, fermented and stored overnight, then thoroughly washed and soaked before drying on raised tables, where the parchment is turned regularly for even, consistent drying.
